Be Nervous

Be Nervous and Be Bold posters are the result of a one-day workshop with Jonathan Ellery. Mr. Ellery came to speak to my class about the design industry and his opinions on the design culture in London. He then had the class design posters for the talk we just had. He told us about his career path and how cynical he is about the trendiness of graphic design and the “flavor of the month” studios that get a lot of pop-culture attention, but don’t have the basic design and type skills to get consistent, paying clients to keep the business afloat. One of the things that stuck out most for me was that he said it’s important to have some anxiety as a designer and nervous energy keeps him on his toes. Hearing that Mr. Ellery is always worried about his day to day future as a designer made a lot of the students feel better. Though it didn’t take away any anxieties I have about my own future, it made me realize that it’s OK to have those feelings. Be Nervous represents my personal experiences at GSA as well as the message Mr. Ellery had for the class.
